UV Gullas Law School

Cebu City has five universities that offer the course of Bachelor of Laws.  One of those is the University of the Visayas, or UV for brevity.  UV is the first university in the Visayas Islands and is famed for its slogan as the “university with a heart”.

This does not mean that even if a student has a failing grade, a little cajoling to his professor will make him/her pass the subject.  It doesn’t mean that way.  Simply put, as a university with a heart means that the officials running the school are emphatic with and considerate of the pressing needs of its students --may it be in terms of finances or time to study.

UV offers many courses like B.S. in Civil Engineering, B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, B.S. in Accountancy, Bachelor of Laws and the like.  I am a graduate of the Bachelor of Laws from this University.  My authority to speak of UV does not go beyond the avenue of the law course.

A school for the employed

The once UV-College of Law was later renamed to Gullas Law School.  As they say, this law school is the appropriate school for working students who aim to finish the degree despite the limited time to spend for reading due to demands of work.  More often than not, 90% of the enrollees are working in different offices, both private corporations and government institutions.

To be able to graduate from Gullas Law School, it requires a strong will and sense of commitment to balance work and school effectively and efficiently.  Being a working student, I did not have the luxury of time to read all the books of each subject.  Taking a full load of all subjects offered for the semester was no joke at all.

To each his own study....

I had two considerations for enrolling in this school.  The factor of time to read was of prime consideration. Working hours end at 5 o’clock in the afternoon and classes start at 5:30 p.m. and end at 9:00 p.m.  The following day, work demands to be in at 8 o’clock in the morning or else a deduction is at stake for tardiness. Practically, I only had the remaining eight hours to read and sleep. So, time management is the key to success in finishing a law course.

I am just thankful to our professors who had fully understood the plight of working students with regard to assigning of cases to digest for oral recitations. Supportive professors do not recognize the word pressure by throwing questions to drained students for orals, at least during my time.  By that way of teaching, students are taught to listen with analysis and take down notes fast.  Oh I forgot, with all the gadgets available at hand, recording discussions is the most common tool to catch up with the lecture.

Cost-saving ...

Second, money matters.  Government employees, at the time I enrolled, enjoyed a 30% discount from the total tuition.  That’s a lot of savings already.  The professors are also considerate to let the students take the exams even without paying the assessment in full for a periodic examination.

I gathered that the current tuition fee for the course is more than P27,000.00 per semester.

School Pride

University of the Visayas-College of Law (also known as the Gullas Law School) has produced graduates who had occupied high ranking public positions in the Legislative and Judiciary branches, like...

  • late Senator Ernesto Herrera, a graduate in year 1966;
  • retired Executive Justice in year 2010 of Court of Appeals Visayas Station,
  • Portia Alino-Hormachuelos, a graduate in year 1963 and now Dean of the College of Law; and
  • retired Executive Justice in year 2013 Court of Appeals Visayas Station, Pampio A. Abarintos.

These are but only a few lawyers who excelled in the law profession which the then University of the Visayas-College of Law is very proud of.  And who knows, the author may be one among them, someday.

Pencil Area

University of the Visayas Gullas Law School, under the administration of Retired Justice Portia A. Hormachuelos, is recently undergoing construction aiming to provide better services to law students.
