poro municipality

Poro Municipality is in Camotes Islands in the province of Cebu, Philippines. Camotes is one of the favorite travel attractions among locals and foreigners alike.

Most travelers to Camotes Island would not miss visiting Poro Municipality since it has various attractions including its famous Poro Rock or Buho Rock – a former resort but is now transformed into an attraction site.

Poro, along with the Municipality of Tudela, is positioned on Poro Island of the Camotes Islands.

The feast of Poro is celebrated in honor of the Santo Niño de Cebu, on the third Friday of January.

poro municipality & people

Poro is composed of 17 barangays which are under its jurisdiction regarding political authority and administrative matters. Here they are:

Adela, Altavista, Cagcagan, Cansabusab, Daan Paz, Eastern Poblacion, Esperanza, Libertad, Mabini, Mercedes, Pagsa, Paz, Rizal, San Jose, Santa Rita, Teguis, and Western Poblacion.

Aside from Cebuano, Waray, Tagalog, and English, the local Porohanon language is also spoken by the townsfolk.

Also called Camotes Visayan, the language is mutually intelligible with other Visayan languages (e.g. Cebuano) spoken in the relaxation of the Camotes Islands, Cebu, other elements of the Visayas, and Northern Mindanao.

Town's title comes from the Waray-Waray phrase puro meaning "island." This Camotes Island is called Leyteños and by Warays. Before the municipality to be proven in Camotes, puro intended the name of all the islands.

Porohanon is distinguished from the means by which the locals substitute /j/ sounds with /Ʒ/, for instance, Cebuano maayong buntag ("good morning") vocalized as maazong buntag in Porohanon. Other variations contain the Porohanon ara dira instead of the regular Cebuano na-a diha.
